Delighted to be at the Orthopaedic Trauma Association 35th Annual Meeting in Denver, USA.
Had an opportunity to present the excellent work that Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust has done to continually improve the care it provides. I also had the privilege of being part of the Resident Fracture Course faculty - designed to educate the next generation of surgeons. Had an excellent time at Essex and Herts Air Ambulance Trust Clinical Governance Day where I lectured on the ‘Pre-hospital management of fractures and dislocations’. Really engaged audience who were keen to learn the safe management techniques required to treat critically-injured patients. Some very probing questions as well.
Congratulations to my colleagues Ed Fitzgerald-O’Connor, Victoria Rose and Asmat Din for organising and running the inaugural Orthoplastics Conference at King’s College Hospital, London. There were over a 140 delegates registered to attend the meeting.
I was honoured to be part of the faculty and spoke about techniques in fracture fixation. It was an exceptional and inspirational day with many speakers talking about the current and future management strategies in open fractures. The list of faculty was a who’s who of leading experts. The international guest speaker was Jason Souza from Walter Reed Medical Centre, Washington DC, USA who spoke about amputee management and targeted muscle reinnervation. Fantastic symposium that ran over two days and concluded today.
We were very fortunate in having Prof Heather Vallier (Cleveland, USA) attend as a guest lecturer and Chair. It was a really interesting course that covered topics including fracture fixation techniques; the importance of intramedullary nailing; and, great debates around fracture fixation methods. it was great to be part of the faculty for such a contemporary and specialist advanced surgical Orthopaedic course.
It was fantastic to see the enthusiasm amongst both the faculty and delegates. I was privileged to be invited to join the faculty at Shock Trauma Centre, Baltimore, as part of their Trauma Surgical Skills Course.
The R Adam Cowley Shock Trauma Centre is part of the University of Maryland Medical Centre. It is internationally renowned and developed the concept of the the golden hour. Many resuscitative and surgical techniques that are now used round the world were originally pioneered at Shock Trauma Centre. They continue to be pioneers in the field of Trauma Care. As such, I was humbled to be invited to their course. It was an excellent day with delegates from around the USA. I had a unique opportunity to go on BBC Radio Essex this evening and talk about Essex and Herts Air Ambulance (EHAAT). I discussed the role of the service, the structure of the team and how it delivers advanced medical interventions at the roadside.
I was privileged to share the platform with Dave, whose daughter was treated by the service. Gavin, our service’s PR officer, was with us and gave a fabulous run down of the service’s history and the ongoing funding that is needed to support the organisation. Like all Air Ambulances, it is a charity funded by the people and it is designed for the people. Thank you BBC Radio Essex, Matt Mackay and his team. Attended the Stryker Advanced Pelvic Trauma Masterclass for Pelvic and Acetabular Surgeons. Fantastic two day course held in Bristol.
It was an excellent opportunity for shared learning amongst friends and colleagues from around the U.K. Spent a fantastic afternoon teaching South East Coast Ambulance Service Critical Care Paramedics. The session was held at St George’s Hospital Medical School (London) and was part of their Masters Programme.
We discussed Orthopaedic emergencies and techniques in managing common fractures and dislocations. Thanks go to Lisa Burrell for organising this session. |
