Orthopaedic Trauma Association (OTA) - Annual Scientific Meeting

10/26/2018

18th Oct 2018 to 20th Oct 2018.
Orlando, Florida, USA.

I was able to attend the above conference with many of my colleagues. It was a fantastic educational event. There were nearly 2000 surgeons present.

I attended the main session, breakout sessions and industry symposia. The conference began at 6:30AM everyday!! It was amazing to hear from many of the pioneers and leaders in the field of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery. I presented on the topic of open fractures (broken bones with overlying lacerations) and how we are using Cerement (specialist bone cement containing antibiotics) as part of a research trial.

There were many opportunities to network with other surgeons, predominantly from the USA, with a view to undertaking future collaborative research.

I was also privileged to be asked to be part of the Pilot User group for a new online educational portal for Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeons (OTAonline.org).

The conference was fantastic and I am looking forward to attending next year.

Visit to Shock Trauma Centre, Baltimore, USA

I was privileged in being able to visit the legendary Shock Trauma Centre (STC) for a week. STC is the designated Level-1 Trauma Centre for the state of Maryland and is part of the University of Maryland Medical Centre. It is a true centre of excellence. I was fortunate in being able to meet the Orthopaedic Trauma Surgeons and review their patient pathways as well as the techniques they use to fix complex fractures. The aim of such visits is to consolidate knowledge and skills in order to continuously improve.
